Thanksgiving and Some Pumpkin Pie

I love pumpkin pie. It’s My favorite Thanksgiving Day dessert. For my international readers, Americans set aside the fourth Thursday in November to give thanks. Pumpkin pie is a traditional food eaten on that day.

What we commonly called the First Thanksgiving was first celebrated in autumn 1621 by a small number of European Americans and some of their aboriginal neighbors. The holiday was informally celebrated until 1789 when President George Washington made a proclamation to celebrate a day of national thanksgiving and prayer.

In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln said Americans should recognize the last Thursday of every November as a day of Thanksgiving. Lincoln did this during the American Civil War. Even in hard times it’s good to be thankful. Finally in 1870 President Ulysses S. Grant signed the holiday into law.

So Give thanks! We serve a giving God who provides pumpkins and many other good things to both us and His creatures. Happy Thanksgiving!
