Preparations for the Season Ahead

God’s creatures know their seasons!

The sound of rustling leaves first alerted me to his presence. His head peeked out from behind a pale birch root and then disappeared again. More rustling. In a flash, he emerged into the frosty sunshine with a single golden leaf. He sniffed, nibbled, and cast it away. In three spritely bounds, he arrived at a new leaf pile and selected a new sample. 

I watched this squirrel investigate leaf after leaf for some invisible qualities that only he could detect. Seems like there are nest-preparations on his mind!

The squirrel hasn’t looked at the calendar, so he doesn’t realize that these chilly mornings are a whole month late in arriving. He also hasn’t been listening to what forecasters predict is in store for us in the approaching El Niño winter. But he knows when it’s time to nibble seeds, when it’s time to gather them, and when it’s time to embark on the tireless search for the best leaves for his winter nest. Keep an eye on those squirrels – God’s creatures know their seasons!

In The Solitude of God’s Presence

Solitude and God’s Presence

There is nothing like the solitude of an early morning in the Canyon Lands alone with God and His creation to give you a feeling of oneness with your Creator. As I was shooting this scene I could not help but feel His presence all around me as a song of praise sprung from my soul.
