“The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things.” Acts 17:24-25

The “Unknown God” Who Made the World

In Acts 17 the Apostle Paul speaks to the people of Athens. In response to all the pagan gods he saw there, he proclaimed the one True God. The people of Athens wanted to hear about this new God. They worshipped many gods already, so why not one more.

Paul used nature and an alter the Greeks built to an “unknown God” to tell them of the God who created everything. Paul explained that as Creator his God lived outside of creation and was not part of it.

The self-existing Creator God that Paul proclaimed was a sharp contrast to the finite gods of the Greeks. As result of Paul’s message Acts 17:34 says, “Some men joined him and believed.”

Praise our God, the one true God. He holds all life in His hands. May we worship Him and Him alone.
