For many today, photography is just a snapshot and a fun picture to post online. But can we make the photographic experience something more? Something that can bring peace, rest and draw us to God?
With all that goes on in life and work, we find it hard to connect with God. So much distracts us and traps us. Both good things and bad things take our focus away from God. But what if there’s a bridge—something we can do that will help us to better connect with God?
As a nature photographer I have discovered that creative photography, especially nature photography, can be that bridge. We can make nature photography a very spiritual act that helps us draw near to God and brings us peace, rest and contentment. The Bible and the Outdoors
I’m not speaking of something of the New Age Movement, but of something biblical (see my statement of faith). When we step into God’s creation, that act alone brings us to a time and a place where we can better connect with God and draw near to Him. Even Jesus spent time in the outdoors with His Heavenly Father (Luke 5:16).
Being in the outdoor sets us up for a great experience to draw near to God. When we throw in the act of spiritual photography, the benefits of this experience are greatly enhanced.
The Bible and Spiritual Photography
God is the first creator and artist. He created us in His image and in doing so placed in us the desire to create as He creates. Our desire to capture things in a photograph in an artistic manner comes from God. Artistic photography is a creative act, and spiritual photography is a spiritual act that draws us near to God.
What do I mean by spiritual photography? I mean to include God in your creative thought process. In spiritual photography, we talk with God as we photograph. And when we look at the world around us, we ponder the question, what does this tell me about God?
In nature photography, spiritual photography comes alive as we consider God’s hand and talk with Him as we photograph. We make God part of our creative process as we examine the things of His creative process.
