Why do you think Psalm 18 calls God a rock? What image of a rock comes to your mind when you read this?
The context of this psalm is largely warfare. As verse 47 reads, “The God who executes vengeance for me, and subdues peoples (or nations) under me.” What kind of a rock would protect somebody in war? A very big one!
When the Bible speaks of God as a rock, it’s not speaking of a pebble or stone or even a big boulder. It’s talking about a mighty rock or mountain: God is our rock of protection, our rock of strength, or rock of shelter, our everlasting rock!
