In the rush of the season we need to slow down, feel cozy and enjoy a little Christmas peace
I wrote this article about peace at Christmas a few years ago. It is timeless and still applicable today.
The Peace of Christmas?
The other day while driving around in my car, I heard a Christmas song on the radio. The words of the song struck a chord with me. I don’t remember the reason for my four-wheel venture that day. Perhaps I was rushing my kids somewhere? Maybe I was going to or from one of my multiple jobs? Or it may have been something to do with the rush of this time of year.
We rush, rush, rush in December as we seek and need peace, but the peace gets lost. And guess what? That is exactly what the song was all about.
Why is it that at this special time of year when we talk about peace and joy all we get is panic? Our lives get so crazy. My life is especially crazy this holiday season. In addition to my photography, teaching and ministry, I took on a new job to help make ends meet. To top it off, my family and I plan to go out of town the week before Christmas. It all makes for quite the crushed Christmas season.
Finding Quiet and Peace
Many of us find ourselves on this hectic Christmas sleigh ride. So much to do, so little time to do it. In the process we may neglect family, friends and peace, but yet those are the very reasons we do this seasonal rushing. Crazy!
A walk outside to enjoy nature during the Christmas season will help us experience a little quiet and peace during the rush of the holidays .
We all need time away and time for peace. No one knows the benefits of these things more than a nature guy like me. I know the importance of taking time out in nature, especially this month. Time outside can be done with our family, friends or we can just get out and walk the dog. It’s helpful to get out and get away. A park, the woods, a local nature preserve or even a neighborhood walk, they all work.
I know it may be cold outside but sometimes the cold makes it better. Many do not like to venture out in the cold, which gives those who do get out more time alone. Plus, a little snow on the ground or in the air absorbs the busyness of the sounds, adding a gentle silence to the peace of Christmas.
Let’s get out and enjoy some time of peace with family or God or both.
