Matthew 28:18-20 and Fishermen at Sunset, the Boundary Waters, Minnesota.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
Go Therefore and Make Disciples
Almost 2000 years ago Jesus told his first disciples to “go”. That call to go remains today. Jesus wants us all to be “fishers of men,” and to make more than just converts. For quite some time many in the Church have focused on getting people to pray a certain prayer to be “saved.” But that’s not what Matthew 28 says.
In the passage Jesus calls His disciples to baptize and to make disciples. Baptism represents that first step of one’s conversion, but to be true followers of Christ we must go deeper and become disciples and help others be disciples.
To be a disciple of Christ means one studies His teachings at depth, makes them predominant in one’s life and to “observe all that I [Christ] commanded”. To truly follow Matthew 28, we must help others become disciples and not just converts.
